Here in my home of Australia, I know that the sadness will remain with us for a long time to come. Lives have been lost, families devastated, homes demolished and communities left wondering how on earth they will pick up the pieces.
A glimmer of light to fix on are some of the tales of survival and bravery that are beginning to emerge. And how, rather than an ‘every man for themselves’ survival mechanism kicking in, people are banding together, immediately offering support and hard work to make sure the beautiful state of Queensland recovers. The fighting spirit, graciousness and camaraderie that has been shown this week, combined with these survivors somehow maintaining a sense of humour, has reminded me just how lucky we all really are.
I wish the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones all the comfort in the world. Our thoughts are with each and every one of you.
